This National Principals Month, we celebrate and turn the spotlight on the evolving role of school leaders. Principals, assistant principals, and administrators are balancing more than ever before, caring for the physical and mental health of students and staff, ensuring campuses remain safe and welcoming, and navigating the fast-changing challenges of educational technology, from AI in the classroom to the debate over cell phone bans.
While principals are at the center of these discussions, too often they are handed rules and mandates that don’t reflect the unique needs of their schools or communities. It is critical that their voices and local input guide decision-making, ensuring policies are not only well-intentioned, but also workable on the ground.

To elevate this vital conversation, the American Federation of School Administrators (AFSA), the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) are hosting a policy briefing that brings together perspectives, strategies, and solutions for today’s schools.
