Honoring Our Veterans and the Leadership They Inspire

As we observe Veterans Day, I want to take a moment to express my deep appreciation to all Veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces, especially those in our AFSA family and throughout our schools. Your courage, commitment, and sense of duty continue to inspire us and remind us of the enduring values that define our nation and our profession.

To all the school leaders who have served, thank you. This past summer, AFSA’s veteran members proudly helped open each day of our convention with the Pledge of Allegiance, standing tall as examples of the courage, dedication, and leadership that continue to guide our work in schools across the country. Their presence served as a powerful reminder that service takes many forms, whether defending our country or leading our school communities with integrity and compassion.

While I never served in the military, I grew up with a deep respect for those who did. My father was a veteran of the Korean War, and I’ll always remember the day he dropped me off at college and recalled that this was an opportunity he missed as he was called to duty.  His words remind me that the opportunities we have today were built on the sacrifices of those who came before us, and that we honor their service best by dedicating ourselves fully to the work of educating and supporting the next generation.

In so many ways, the leadership our veterans display in schools mirrors the leadership they showed in uniform: steadfast, humble, and mission driven. Whether serving in our schools or districts, AFSA U.S. Veterans continue to uphold the same core values of honor, teamwork, and responsibility that define great educators and great Americans alike.

On this Veterans Day and every day, we thank you for your service to our country and to our students. Your example reminds us that leadership is not just about authority; it is about service, sacrifice, and the pursuit of something greater than ourselves.
