Two AFSA leaders have been recognized on City & State New York’s prestigious Labor Power 100 list, which highlights the most influential figures in one of the state’s most politically powerful sectors.
The annual ranking, produced in partnership with journalist Aaron Short, spotlights union chiefs who have secured major victories—whether through new contracts, legislation, or organizing wins—and those who have successfully guided members through challenging times.
AFSA President Mark Cannizzaro ranked No. 39. City and State said Cannizzaro is well known for his leadership of CSA during crises including Superstorm Sandy and the COVID-19 pandemic. He follows in the footsteps of Ernest Logan—another former CSA leader and now president emeritus of AFSA.
AFSA General Vice President Henry Rubio ranked No. 32. Rubio currently serves as president of the Council of School Supervisors and Administrators (CSA), AFSA Local 1. The selection committee said, Rubio has emerged as a strong voice for school leaders. As New York City works to comply with a state law requiring smaller class sizes, he has stressed the urgent need for more staff. This spring, he praised City Hall’s plan to add more than 3,700 teachers and supported a new state ban on smartphones in public schools.
AFSA’s dual presence on the list underscores the union’s growing influence at both the city and national levels, with its leaders shaping education policy and labor priorities for school administrators across New York and beyond.
